Backyard Summer Fun
Summer is here and it's hot and the days are long. Do you have plans on
what you are going to do to keep the kids cool and entertained?
|
I have mastered the art of summer
backyard fun over my twenty plus years of parenting and entertaining the neighborhood crowd.
- First of all you are going to need some headache pain reliever for yourself and a large pitcher of
lemonade for the kids.
- Next comes a summertime classic, water toys. A simple garden hose works wonders and will entertain kids
for hours as well as keep them cooled off. (Remember though that kids shouldn't drink from a hose.)
A small plastic swimming pool from your local store will also keep kids happy. Be sure you are
with small children at all times during water play as children can drown in only a few inches of water.
A good idea for outdoor water play is the The softer design and
lack of any pointed or rough edges makes it a safe alternative to garden sprinklers which sometimes are sharp and can
cut kids who happen to slip on the wet grass and land on them.
- Another rite of summer for kids is heading to the local park. It is a often needed break for moms as well.
Take along a snack or light summer lunch and spend the afternoon if it's not too hot out there. When the park
isn't an option, and let's face it, parks can often times be quite crowded during the summer, then having
a backyard oasis is a great idea. Gone are the days of flimsy aluminum swing sets. Today's outdoor toys
are made of safe, colorful plastics and can compete with most the playground equipment in the park.
looks like wood but this play center is made of durable materials that are maintenance free.

SNACK TIME!
- No sooner do kids start their play & they are in need of a snack. Keeping some healthy snacks foods
on hand is always a challenge. I've got some ideas that may help you keep them happy until dinnertime.
- Keep a large plastic container of trail mix at the ready. Make your own mix of anything you've got
on hand.. I usually start with some cheerios, chocolate chips, & raisins. Anything works and it's handy for kids
to grab on the run.
- Apples & Dip is a favorite around our house. To make the dip, take a container of cool whip and add a jar of strawberry preserves or jelly.
Kids love to scoop up the dip with the apple slices.
- A must have summertime food is the classic popsicle. To make a healthier version without all the sugar,
freeze some 100% juice of any flavor. There are quite a few easy to use popsicle molds out there, or just use an ice tray.
- A great snack food of summer is a smoothie. It's healthy, cool and can be made out of most any type of fruit you have on hand.
Add fruit (bananas, strawberries, kiwi, blueberries, etc.) to the blender, add some yogurt of any flavor, ice and some fruit juice.
Blend until smooth. Another option is to make the smoothie mix and then freeze them into popsicles. Adding protein powder makes this snack
even healthier and the kids wont even know it's there!
-
Chocolate Sodas are a refreshing treat. Add 2 tsp chocolate syrup, 2 Tbsp milk, 2 Tbsp vanilla ice cream,
1 cup gingerale and some ice cubes. Blend in the blender and enjoy!
